David Shuster… most annoying person

Not just a suspect journalist (always looking for the “gotcha” moment) but also an unrepentant political lapdog of the left, I’ve brought back “Most Annoying Person” in order to bestow the honor upon this arrogant carnival barker.  From the cocky grin to the shellacked hair is there anybody that can turn the stomach within the nanosecond it takes to flip through the channels to get to some REAL news?  I dare say, no.  Just a glimpse of this hack is enough to send me running for the Zantac.

Mr. Shuster, I dub thee ”Most Annoying Person”, congratulations.  Take a bow.   Smile big and pretty now… we need to see those bottom teeth of yours.  That’s a good boy.

David Cook wins ‘American Idol’, I called it wrong the audience got it right!

Nice.  It didn’t matter what Simon, Randy or Paula thought.  The audience voted for David Cook and he beat Archuleta by 12 million votes!  This is great news and I am very happy for Cook, he deserved to win it!

Now I’m going to go into a corner and lick my wounds… as I simultaneously celebrate.  It’s tough to feel bad about being wrong, when I wholly WANTED to be wrong.  If you have to be wrong in life… I recommend this way of going about it!  SWEET!

Grats, David Cook!

Tale of two Davids, Archuleta vs. Cook: American Idol finale fails as showcase

OK, I used to be very proud to announce that I was one of the three people across this country that did not watch ‘American Idol’.  This season, I tuned in to watch the train wrecks called “auditions” and never stopped watching.  It’s a pretty funny prospect given that this is supposedly the lowest rated season for Idol.  I got onboard just in time for its decline.

I have always thought that the winners of Idol were all pretty suspect as talents.  I don’t know that a popularity contest necessarily determines talent and my assessment seems to have been justified by this season.  The two finalists are completely different artists.  Cook is the pseudo rocker and Archuleta is the Manilow-like, easy listening format friendly, bland that seems to permeate music.  Throughout the competition Cook has shown a willingness to take chances, to expand his boundaries and to pretty much create an identity for himself in a media circus that is all about punching artists from molds.  Archuleta is white bread, safe and boring.

Last night, ’American Idol’ did its best to crown Archuleta the winner of the competition, even before the first vote was cast.  With the way the tweens are lapping up this Archuleta kid, I think it was safe to assume he was going to win.  It’s the lovesick girls that light up the phone lines, not the discriminating adults.  Just in case that didn’t happen though, Simon, Randy and Paula were there to add their own insurance policy… crowning Archuleta the night’s winner.  The problem I have with that is it ignores the entirety of the competition.  For months Cook has been a consistent winner.  Archuleta had a better night last night, but does that make him the Idol?  I would hope not, but unfortunately… tonight will likely see the breathy, scrawny, mealy, Archuleta being declared the next big thing in music.

Ugh… and the industry wonders why they can’t SELL their wares anymore!

Best character on television? Benjamin Linus of “Lost”, hands down!

For a while, “Lost”, lost me.  The episodes became annoying.  Plot was nothing but a plodding bore.  It seemed as if the producers knowing that the premise of the show was a wee bit thin, decided to “flesh things out”, by writing all kinds of filler episodes.  While I can appreciate the need to define characters, there was a whole lot of nothing going on for what seemed like seasons.  Season 3 picked it up a bit and with the end of “Lost” now well in sight, things have moved along at a more frantic pace.

Whether plodding or racing along, one of the always interesting elements of the show comes in the form of Benjamin Linus, played to subtle perfection by Michael Emerson.  Is there a cooler character on the wee box these days?  Uh, no.  It doesn’t matter what the guy is doing, he commands attention.  Responsible for a laundry list of murders and mayhem you can’t help but feel like the guy has his reasons and they don’t all seem so horribly corrupt.  Over the last two seasons we’ve seen Ben go from arch villain to ally.  Who would have thought that we’d all be rooting for this guy?  At the same time, you just know he seems destined to once again turn.  Like the scorpion and the turtle you can’t help but wonder when Ben is going to revert to his familiar nature… but then has he ever truly strayed far from it?  He’s made a deal with the survivors in order to further his goals and sooner or later, should they prevail… it’ll be game on again.  “Lost” has recaptured its mojo… and a lot of the credit rests with Michael Emerson and the character of Ben.  I really hope they don’t end up whacking him!

As for those wondering about what exactly is going on… I can only say for me it all boils down to something along the lines of, “he who controls the past, controls the future”.

Battlestar Galactica Season 4 - Why are they destroying my favorite show?

Posted on April 28th, 2008 by Mark.

There have been three solid seasons of Battlestar Galactica, and upon hearing that the 4th would be its last I took it for granted that it would be great.  After all, you would expect that the people that have been enjoying rave reviews and declarations that the show is the greatest on television would just want to go out right.  How wrong I was.

Battlestar Galactica has been a smart, savvy, sophisticated and sexy show that just so happens to take place in a science fiction environment.  The storylines and the character development have to this point been excellent.  The actors on the show are first rate (Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell are no slouches) and do the material justice.  You really don’t think about how far fetched the circumstances that these people face are… because they’re so damn believable and so HUMAN.   This is not the 70s Battlestar Galactica, this is not a kiddie show… it’s got depth.

So what’s wrong now?  Well, the show has gone completely off the rails in my mind.  The stories have degraded and fall somewhere in the neighborhood of the absurd.  What is it with Ron Moore (producer) and his need to include some kind of messianic element in everything he does?  During the Star Trek Deep Space Nine days, it was Sisko… now it’s Baltar or Starbuck or Laura or Six that are the God Squad.  I understand that an exploration into humanity might examine faith, BUT ENOUGH ALREADY.  The whole concept/arc has degraded into something akin to a Manson family reunion.  To add insult to injury, when we get a break from the religious absurdities of the show, we are thrust into either legal dramas like those on Boston Legal or worse, political fare like something out of West Wing.  Ah yes, the idealistic Lee Adama, newly appointed to the government wrestles with the older realist President Laura Roslin.  Ugh!  Do you see where I’m going here?

Meanwhile, as all of this GARBAGE is being tossed at us week after week I am realizing with a feeling of dread that the remaining episode count is fast dwindling.  I almost feel like I am being punished for having watched the show.  It’s as if the producers, angered by the decision last season to end the show this season are saying to the audience…. ”SCREW YOU!”  It’s a real shame.  It’s like they’re taking a torch to 5 years of greatness.  They’re systematically destroying the show one episode at a time.  I am a huge fan, but even I have a limit to what it is that I will accept.  At some point I might have to stop watching just so that the show isn’t further diminished in my mind.  I can walk away happy, wondering if they aren’t still out in space somewhere looking for Earth.  I don’t need to see the show slowly bled to death.

Speaking of slowly being bled to death… why is it that nobody seems to care about the “survivor count” anymore?  It’s somewhere in the 30,000 range now, down from 50,000 and while they used to make a big deal about how humanity was dying out every time that number was lowered, now it’s just like… oh well.  Nothing is dire anymore.  Nothing seems to matter.  It’s all just the same old motions.  So sad… I know people unfamiliar with the show won’t care… but this was a great show and now, it’s just common place television drivel.

‘Lost’ premier finds some of the prior magic

I’ve been on the fence with ‘Lost’, you can’t help but think after three seasons that the writers have gone out of their way to throw the entire kitchen sink of “fictional” tricks into this one series.  Make no mistake, for all of the talk of a definitive storyline, a lot of this stuff just has to be off the cuff, “you know what would be great,” filler.  For a long time there were too few answers and too many new questions raised.  Tonight it seemed to me at least… that they might finally be getting around to the point of the show.

I loved the way this episode jumped between Hugo in the nut house and where the story left off at the end of season 3.  That’s the kind of quirky storytelling that made ‘Lost’ so interesting for the first two seasons.  Sure it can become frustrating, but as this is the downhill glide to the end for the series, I’d imagine things will progress at a brisker pace now.

It’s great to have ‘Lost’ back again!

‘Dexter’ heading to CBS?

It appears that the writers strike is making for all kinds of programming adjustments for the networks.  NBC announced that it will be tossing a lot of “reality” shows onto the air in the coming months, and now there is word that CBS will be tapping its Showtime premium cable service for some content.  The first series that will be appearing on CBS is ‘Dexter’, which is the story of a forensics expert with the Miami PD who also happens to be a serial killer.  There is a lot of gruesome violence, sexual content and language in the show, so it’s going to have to be edited like mad.  I can only imagine what the show will end up looking like when network censors get done with it.  Still, the series is great and even a watered down ‘Dexter’ is better than most of what’s on commercial television.

I just wish the writers strike would hurry up and end.  There is only so much material fit for network rehashing, and already shows are being pushed back months because of what’s been going on.  Season 2 of ‘Dexter’ ends on Showtime this Sunday, and it could be a year or more before Season 3 airs with the way this strike is going!
