Maybe I’m the lone voice out here in the wild but I am thrilled that the Olympics are FINALLY behind us. Talk about two weeks of wasted effort. I watch “Today” religiously (just the first hour) but for the last two weeks I have had to tune into other channels so that I could hear about something other than swimming, gymnastics or some other sport I could care less about. NBC engaged in an orgy of Olympic coverage. They paraded out all sorts of people be they family members or even team alternates to discuss this, that or the other. Do we really need to know much more than who won what? “You just won the gold, how do you feel?” Should I be ashamed for not caring (or assuming that somebody that won a gold medal would be happy), or should Matt Lauer or Meredith Viera feel ashamed for asking such a dopey question? I was done with the Olympics before they even began. Congratulations to those that did well in China, and forgive me for my lack of interest. It’s not personal.
So just as I’m thinking, thank goodness these “games” are over the new media orgy has commenced. It’s the Democratic National Convention. Just like the Olympics the talking heads are parading every fringe contact of Obama’s in front of their cameras. I have rarely heard such cyclical pontification. The conversation goes nowhere. There is little that is critical or insightful offered up. It’s just a rehash upon a rehash of what it is that these people expect will happen at the convention. Let me try to help out here. We’re going to get a lot of flowery speeches. Several Democrats will get up and take shots at the Republicans (including Joe Biden who will likely go rabid before our very eyes) and then on Thursday, Barack Obama will come out and restore dignity with a bunch of populist rhetoric that puts him, “above” all of the frivolous nastiness.
Then on Friday when I’m thinking, thank goodness that’s all over, the bloody Republican Convention will be gearing up! Oh, good grief! Take comfort those that agree that the last month has been a vapid, void of media myopia… in 70 days or so it will all be over. Then we can get back to the important stuff… Paris and Britney!
Woe are we.

I’ve contemplated this trade all day. I have gone from thinking that my poor, hapless team had gone and taken on Green Bay’s problem at the expense of their dignity to believing this is a great move. I must admit that it is pretty sad to see Chad Pennington go out this way. He left a part of himself on the field for the Jets and anybody that says different or disparages the guy’s heart is a cynical fool. Chad came back too soon, he hadn’t properly healed and it cost him dearly. He deserved better than this and I can only hope that he comes out of this happy wherever it is that he lands. Just as I have no delusions where it concerns Brett always being a Packer at heart… whoever gets Chad, gets a lifelong Jet at heart.
As for Brett, what’s to say? Even old and washed up as he may or may not be… we’ll all see soon enough if he can get himself back into playing shape… he puts a lot of threats onto the table that weren’t there under Chad or Clemens. He still has a strong gun and as such receivers won’t know off the bat that they are running decoy routes. Brett Favre can get the ball down the field to anybody that’s open. For years the Jets had to rely on Pennington’s ability to be crafty in spite of a weak arm. With Favre defenses will have to respect the fact that the guy has the potential to connect with any of his receivers and the Jets have a pretty respectable lot of them for Brett to toss it off to. The Jets can move away from the smoke and mirrors and get down to beating their opponents rather than out thinking them.
The added bonus in all of this is that Brett has a heck of a work ethic and he can be a real inspiration to a young quarterback coming up in the system. Where Chad had to worry about whether or not somebody was going to take his job, Brett doesn’t. He’s done it all and nobody can ever take that away from him. He can impart wisdom and help to cultivate the talent without fear. That could be a great thing for the Jets in the long term.
So what do I think about the trade? I’m digging it. The Jets by virtue of this trade have managed to get some press in a city that is coming off a Giants Superbowl victory. Even with all the Eli hype (and believe me I love that the kid beat the Pats), Brett brings some credibility to the woefully disrespected Jets. I’d be happy with the playoffs under Brett, but that likely won’t be good enough for crazed fans that are seeing this as “the shot”. I think this is a place to build from, which is funny considering the Jets just acquired a guy in the twilight of his career.
J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets! Jets!

BUAHAHAH! Is there anything better than seeing Tiki Barber eat crow? How badly do you think he wanted the Patriots to win last night? Sure he comes off like he’s happy for the Giants, but I’m not buying it. Watching him interview Eli was priceless. The look on his face. The forced smile. Eli saying, “I knew I had it in me, but I needed to do it in my own time.” JUST FREAKIN’ BEAUTIFUL! After slamming the coaches, the quarterback and anybody else he could toss under the bus, Tiki Barber misses a ring by ONE SEASON! Absolutely wonderful stuff to behold. The comment by Eli was so subtle, yet such a slap to the face of that overrated runt.  Â
I was also happy to see a shot or two of Shockey, another divisive complainer, when Boss made his sweet, sweet, play! Seems when you take the whiners out of the locker room and off the television screen, great things can happen. Â

I loathe those bunch of cheating bastards in New England. How cruel is it to be 18-0 and end up 18-1 while losing THE SUPERBOWL?! BUAHAHAHAH! I LOVE IT! Congrats to my bro and my buddy Paul, life long Giant fans.  I yelled so loud I blew out my voice, you guys are in my thoughts! Nice to see Coughlin BEAT Belichick. Nice to see the Manning brothers win it back to back. This is the best Superbowl game that I have ever watched. If somebody has seen a better one in 37 years, by all means remind me. Props to the Giant defense… next time MAIM the SOB!
I am SOOOOOO HAPPY! WOOHOO!  New York tops New England… the universe is right again! “18 and nothing!” it is going to be the new slogan for choking!

Here’s my Superbowl prediction, Giants 20 and the Patriots 17. The Giants will be expecting the pressure on Eli, just like the last half of the last match-up between these two teams and will have adjusted. Patriots’ hopes dashed two years straight by the Mannings.
F Tom Brady and F Bill Belicheat. No sparkling clean record for a team that just looks DIRTY to the core.

While I would have loved to have seen New England beaten today, there is something very epic about the Giants standing in the way of the Pats and Belichick. I don’t know that the Giants will have the stuff to stop Brady and his arsenal, but it sure would be a hell of a thing if they pulled off an upset. It’s the kind of thing that would automatically become legend and add to the NFL’s lore.Â
Tonight’s game against the Packers was the kind of thing that tests a team’s mettle. Missing field goals one after another and the coughing up of the ball TWICE by R W McFumbles are a couple of examples. When you live to win after things like that, you become cool as ice. I don’t think that Eli and the Giants will go into the Superbowl feeling intimidated. They belong there every bit as much as the Pats do. Watching the Packers, there is no way that they could have beaten the Patriots, NONE. The game will be a lot more interesting with the Giants.
A couple of observations. First, Joe Buck is a douche. When he tried to press the issue of ball control on Smith’s reception by saying the ball “was moving”, I wanted to reach into the television and strangle his pencil neck. It was about the spot Joe, listen to Troy next time… he was trying to help you out. Next, Al Harris is a bitch. I’m sorry, you talk smack, get in the face of Burress, proceed to get OWNED and then cop out with CRAMPS? Heavy flow day Al? Lastly, if Favre retires he leaves the NFL as one of the classiest guys to ever play the game. The Packers had a good season and there would be no shame in him saying, “I’m done.”
Congrats to the Giant fans out there (you know who you are). I’m just really happy to see a New York team in there and I can hardly wait for the big game! Go BIG BLUE!Â

A proud moment here in the household. We just got back from a football banquet and awards ceremony during which the boy was named the freshman team’s most valuable player on offense (he had a few nice runs this year). The coach had some very kind words for the boy, saying that he envisions big things for him in the coming years and calling his work ethic second to none.  Considering that I’ve watched the boy go from couch potato’ing it with me on Sundays watching the Jets to making it a serious passion I have to say it was all a little surreal. This kid will even go to Varsity games and be the waterboy just to be a part of it all. My goodness time is flying. Peewee leagues, midget leagues and now his first high school season split between the freshman team and the JV squad… anyday now he’ll be playing out his final Varsity year!
Here’s to more banquets, more awards, more prideful moments and a continuation of the quality work ethic. Â

News that Joe Torre and the Yankees could not strike a deal did not come as a shock. “The Boss” had made it pretty clear that he was intending on getting rid of Torre if the Yanks did not advance beyond the series with the Indians. Nothing that Steinbrenner does, ever makes much sense so painting Torre as a loser after a stellar run as manager of the greatest franchise in baseball history seemed the status quo. The only way this could have ended well for Torre was if he’d managed to win the series and then told George to take the gig and choke on it anyway. I was really rooting for the team to go all the way just so that Joe would have had a chance to do that very thing. Sure the Yanks offered him a contract but it was a slap in the face and really all they wanted to do was put Joe in the position of having to pull the trigger. They knew an out and out firing would not sit well with the fans.
I for one would like to thank Joe Torre for the part he played in providing a lot of years of excitement for we fans of the Yanks. They can say that he was too laid back, that he’d lost his desire or whatever else it is that can be offered up as proof that it was time that this happened… I don’t care. For twelve years you could bank on one thing… extra games at the end of the season. People think that a huge payroll means you should be there every year. People think that it should be easy to win with a team like that… I say bull. If anything it seems that it might take more to motivate a clubhouse full of celebrity millionaires to give a damn. They’re getting paid regardless… they’re in NY… they’ve made it. How hungry can they still be? So Joe, I offer a heartfelt thanks… God help the next bastard that has to come in and compete with your record!

You might see him at your local tavern, perhaps sitting at the bar or maybe out back puking into a dumpster. Just make sure that he has not gotten ahold of a belt, shoelaces or anything else that might be used to end this poor bastard’s life.
The Mets imploded. It was a sickening dive from soaring heights that ended not in a great flash of fire and a loud bang, but rather with a wimper. Kids cried, fat guys in their 40s named Louie cried and I am sure a lot of friends in Queens are walking around in a daze. As a Yankee fan I should relish the downfall of the Metropolitans, but I’m not.Â
I’m down one team to watch and pay attention to in the post season. Curiosity would have demanded that I watch what the dread Mets were up to… but now, who am I going to tune in for? The Phillies? Are you kidding me? Fuggedaboutit!Â
