Maybe I’m the lone voice out here in the wild but I am thrilled that the Olympics are FINALLY behind us. Talk about two weeks of wasted effort. I watch “Today” religiously (just the first hour) but for the last two weeks I have had to tune into other channels so that I could hear about something other than swimming, gymnastics or some other sport I could care less about. NBC engaged in an orgy of Olympic coverage. They paraded out all sorts of people be they family members or even team alternates to discuss this, that or the other. Do we really need to know much more than who won what? “You just won the gold, how do you feel?” Should I be ashamed for not caring (or assuming that somebody that won a gold medal would be happy), or should Matt Lauer or Meredith Viera feel ashamed for asking such a dopey question? I was done with the Olympics before they even began. Congratulations to those that did well in China, and forgive me for my lack of interest. It’s not personal.
So just as I’m thinking, thank goodness these “games” are over the new media orgy has commenced. It’s the Democratic National Convention. Just like the Olympics the talking heads are parading every fringe contact of Obama’s in front of their cameras. I have rarely heard such cyclical pontification. The conversation goes nowhere. There is little that is critical or insightful offered up. It’s just a rehash upon a rehash of what it is that these people expect will happen at the convention. Let me try to help out here. We’re going to get a lot of flowery speeches. Several Democrats will get up and take shots at the Republicans (including Joe Biden who will likely go rabid before our very eyes) and then on Thursday, Barack Obama will come out and restore dignity with a bunch of populist rhetoric that puts him, “above” all of the frivolous nastiness.
Then on Friday when I’m thinking, thank goodness that’s all over, the bloody Republican Convention will be gearing up! Oh, good grief! Take comfort those that agree that the last month has been a vapid, void of media myopia… in 70 days or so it will all be over. Then we can get back to the important stuff… Paris and Britney!
Woe are we.
