This isn’t about right and wrong, and then at the same time it’s about nothing but right and wrong. The CIA destroyed two tapes that documented the interrogations of two Al-Qaeda operatives. Was illegal torture used in these interrogations? I suppose now we’ll never really know. The CIA claims that it destroyed the tapes because it wanted to protect the identity of some of its agents that were in attendance. I suppose they’ve never heard of “blurring” and other effects that can be employed to do just that. It’s such a lame excuse that it makes it painfully obvious that despite claims to the contrary, illegal methods of torture were likely utilized. How do I know? I suppose I can’t prove that they were but then the CIA can’t prove that they weren’t… now can they?
News of the destruction of these tapes has set the Democrats into motion. They’re calling for investigations and all sorts of inquiries into what exactly went on at these interrogations and who knew about them. Too bad the Dems can’t seem to see the forest for the trees. While as a point of law and decency what went on at these interrogations might matter, the fact is that garden variety Americans could care less if some suspected Al-Qaeda thugs were tortured. As a matter of fact, these wild pursuits for the truth are likely making a lot of middle America wonder if the Dems have the stomach to deal with the scum out there that wants us dead.Â
I agree completely that the Bush administration’s abduction and torture techniques are cause for concern. I understand that this great nation built on the principles of law and order is looking more and more like the very thugs we want to defeat. I get it. Sadly, a lot of this country won’t get it. They’ll see this as another means to settle a score with Bush that at the very same time appears to provide aid and comfort to the enemy. Law and order Americans don’t give a damn about whether or not some Al-Qaeda operative was tortured or not. Hell, I believe that a lot of people (perhaps even a majority) would wholly support the torture of “terrorists”. As a matter of fact I think a lot of Americans take it for granted that WE ARE TORTURING these bastards.
So I wonder what the end game is for the Dems. It seems another fool’s errand. They won’t indict the administration and seek impeachment but they’ll take up an unpopular cause like defending supposed Al-Qaeda operatives. It makes absolutely no sense. While I can see that this is a breach of LAW, it’s not something that will be perceived as WRONG. What will be perceived as wrong by a great many people is a witch hunt against people that are supposedly protecting us from terrorists.
Pelosi and Reid are imbeciles. They’re lack of tact and political savvy is shocking. The Democrats are their own worst enemy. They are rudderless, clueless and ignorant where it concerns public sentiment. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Republicans just might pull it out in 2008!
